How many steps a day should you walk?
The famous 10,000 started as a marketing number. Research since then is encouraging: more steps help, and the biggest gains come from moving up from a low base.
- Any increase from a low base helps most.
- Benefits level off somewhere around 6,000–10,000.
- Pick a goal a little above your usual.
What research suggests
A 2022 analysis of 15 studies in The Lancet Public Health found that people who walked more each day had a lower risk of dying early, with the benefit levelling off at around 6,000–8,000 steps a day for adults over 60 and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults.
This is general information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, ask your doctor what's right for you.
Set a goal you'll keep
Look at your average for the last week and aim about 1,000–2,000 steps higher. A goal you reach most days beats a perfect one you never hit.
Think in weeks
Busy days happen. HYFO counts active days in the week against a weekly goal, so one low day doesn't reset anything.
