BMI categories for adults

  • Below 18.5: underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9: healthy range
  • 25 to 29.9: overweight
  • 30 and above: obese

These are the WHO categories. Because South Asian adults tend to carry more body fat at the same BMI, lower cut-offs are often used in India: overweight from about 23 and obese from about 25 to 27.5.

What BMI can and can't tell you

BMI is a quick screening number, not a verdict. It can't tell muscle from fat, and it says nothing about where weight is carried. Waist size, activity and how you feel matter too. If you're worried about your weight, talk to a doctor.

Questions

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. At 170 cm and 70 kg: 70 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 24.2.

What is a healthy BMI?

For adults, the WHO healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. For South Asian adults, lower cut-offs are often used, with overweight from about 23.

Is BMI accurate?

It's a rough guide. BMI doesn't tell muscle from fat, and it doesn't account for age, sex or build, so very muscular people can score high. It isn't meant for children or pregnancy.
